Peabody Morning Reading

In January, 2011, August Gate began a literacy program at Peabody School in the Clinton Peabody housing projects in South St. Louis.  This program was birthed out of a desire to serve our city in a tangible way based on the needs of a community. The administration told us that their biggest need at Peabody was student literacy.  With the help of Principal Chereyl Spann and Mission: St. Louis, we developed a strategy to supplement the school in their efforts to accomplish this goal.

Over 90 percent of the students at Peabody qualify for the free/reduced lunch program. This means that almost all the families there are at or below the poverty level.  We currently serve 17 third and fourth grade students, Ms Barton's class. This program provides a first step for us to learn what it really looks like to serve a neighborhood, be consistent and build relationships with faculty, children, and families.

The program takes place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 7:30-8:30. The students eat breakfast and then come to hang out with us!  If you would like to join us in our efforts and learn what it looks like to serve the city where you live, you can START HERE.
